More Information about Nairobi Railway Museum
The Railway museum in Nairobi is a railway museum adjacent to the Nairobi railway station. It is one place you will want to go to if you want to learn the history of the Lunatic express or even the city of Nairobi. Established in 1971, it contains many exhibits from the now defunct East African Railways, and is still connected to a line that is used to bring in more locomotives.
What to do at the railway Museum in Nairobi
See old locomotives and relics
Most of the collections are full size steam locomotives that first ran on the lunatic express. However there are other collections such as the rolling stock and other smaller exhibits and models. There is a yard that contains exhibits of the different steam engine locomotives. One of these is the same one that made the maiden voyage from the port city of Mombasa to Nairobi on the Lunatic express. There is also the 259 ton giant locomotive, known as the 59 or the mountain class. It is one of the most powerful ever built, capable of moving 1200ton in a single pull.
Often some of these old engines are taken out to pull carriages the way it was done hundreds of years ago. And tourists often enjoy short rides inside these locomotives to places such as Athi River and Naivasha.
Learn Nairobi’s history
But what you can also do at this museum is to learn the history of Nairobi. And the railway museum in Nairobi is the right place to find out how this city came into being. How did Nairobi come to be? Why was the current location chosen? What were the development stages of this city? These are some of the questions that can be answered here.
At this museum there are a huge collection of photographs that show the history of Nairobi from its infancy. Also on display are images showing the occurrences and milestones during the construction of the Uganda railway.
